GreenFeedTM (US Patent 7966971, others pending)
Methane is a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential more than 23 times higher than carbon dioxide. Methane emissions from cattle and other ruminant animals is a by-product of enteric fermentation, a natural digestive process that enhances the animal's ability to utilize low quality forage. Methane emissions, mostly during eructation, are a significant energy loss to the animal. Minimizing methane lowers the greenhouse gas footprint of livestock but also can sometimes increase animal feed efficiency. Therefore decreasing methane emissions can sometimes lower production costs.
GreenFeed is a field-measurement system to quantify methane and carbon
dioxide emissions from cattle. The system is low cost and does not
require handling individual animals during operation. It allows the
operator to remotely monitor emissions from individual animals, to
easily aggregate the total emissions for a specific herd, and to track
changes over time.

GreenFeed Applications
GreenFeed can be tailored to fit unique and very-specific needs for individual operators across the cattle and dairy industries:
- It allows farmers to measure methane emissions from individual cows.
- It allows farmers to identify changes in methane emissions from their herd and individual cows over time.
- It allows users to measure baseline performance, then monitor the changes in emissions as management changes are implemented. This is important for projects aimed specifically to reduce methane emissions.
- It can allow farmers to determine the effectiveness of different management strategies on their herd's methane emissions.
- It can allow farmers to determine when their pasture food quality has been degraded.
